Steph + Ben: married on a mountain!

October 3, 2011

The simply gorgeous Mrs. Kriete. For all you photographers out there, I want you to know I did NOTHING to enhance her amazing eyes. She was born with those peepers!

For all the times Steph has been my right-hand and partner-in-crime for a wedding, and I’ve been posting her gorgeous images here on this page, it is extra fun to post my images from HER beautiful wedding to her love, Ben.

Steph, at the Hotel Northampton.

On Saturday, the two of them created a feast for the senses with a glorious wedding filled with beauty and creativity, but on a misty mountaintop in Massachusetts, all of us were reminded that it all comes down to something so simple–two people deeply in love, surrounded by those who know and love them most.

First look on a mountaintop.

A sweet and teary moment.

With rain most of the night before the wedding and all morning, we prepared for weather at its wettest.  But 30 minutes before we arrived,  the rain had stopped, and a beautiful mist unfurled itself across the valley while we stood on the mountaintop.

You may have detected an orange/fall color theme. Banner hand-made by Steph.

A teary bride and a choked up groom exchanged tender, heartfelt vows, and then, all smiles, walked hand in hand down the aisle to bagpipe music–fitting for the misty blue and green valleys rolled out below.

After a record 35 minutes for family, wedding party and couple portraits including four locations (don’t try this at home, folks–unless your clients are both photographers who scouted the locations in advance and know how to pay attention to fading light!), we arrived at the famed Blue Heron Restaurant (home of  Sue Sylvester, a.k.a. Jane Lynch’s, wedding celebration last year), where they danced, they dined, they were toasted and the room seemed to envelop them in a giant hug.

Cupcakes! Homemade by the moms.

My second shooter.

First dance to “Stand By Me.”

Conga line!

Baby due, well, now! Baby decided to go to a wedding instead.

It was a true delight and honor to witness your day, Steph and Ben. I’m so happy to have you as family as well as friends. A few to share here, and more online here!

Enjoy your mini-moon, and happy love to you both!

xoxo,  Anna

Ten on Ten: September 2011

September 10, 2011

Imagine my surprise when I realized I hadn’t posted a single thing here since my last ten on ten–that’s what end of summer and hurricanes will do to you.

I have posted plenty on my Hank & Willie tumblr blog–perfect for iPhone photos on the go!

I also have  lots of new client images on Facebook at Anna Sawin Photography, and lots more to come when I get through my next editing marathon!

But more importantly, I continue to love this project, ten on ten–a passionate group of ten lovely and amazing photographers from the United States and Canada taking ten images, one hour apart on one day out of the month, documenting life as it happens around them. On the tenth of every month, we post our ten images, and if you follow our links, you’ll make it around the whole circle of ten. Enjoy.

This month I’m linking to my dear friend Melissa–see her ten on ten at

These images were taken on Tuesday, September 8, 2011. Our oldest was finally headed back to school–he had been due to start the previous Wednesday, but Hurricane Irene had other plans. The drenching rains on this day were the remains of Tropical Storm Lee, the storm that brought such devastating flooding to the mid-Atlantic area.

School supplies! I love school supplies.

Someone is really excited about getting ready for school! Will, age seven.

The bus stop crew this year, plus Henry who has one more year to go.

The cucumbers just keep coming. No complaints in this house.

What we AREN’T doing today for the first time in days. They have been boogie boarding and skim boarding for hours each day.

School work for Henry on this rainy day. He starts kindergarten tomorrow, but he’s been working on letters while Will does his summer reading.

Rain, rain, that’s okay! Mom and Henry toe to toe–off to the apple and peach orchard we go!

With a stop at Clyde’s Cider Mill on the way home, the traditional first day of school snack!

The big kids are gone for a long day!

Second grade success!

Missing our lovely nursery school, our first year without a child there since 2007. What a happy, magical place it is.

Ten on Ten: August 2011

August 10, 2011

I’ve been mourning a bit the lack of kid posts here on this blog, the one that started as their electronic baby book. But until I have a new blog to debut (this fall–we had to take a breather during wedding season!), I’ve been posting client work here, and today it feels great to return to my roots and post a series of personal photos.

The inspiration for this came from a great group of women photographers. One of them—who takes the most heartstoppingly gorgeous photos of her brood—suggested this project and I am so grateful to her!

So here’s the plan: one day a month, I document life around me by taking ten photos, one roughly every hour.

On the tenth day of the month, each of us posts our ten photos, and you can follow around the circle of eight of us if you like.

Today I’m linking to Carrie of Carrie Hill Photography, and you will absolutely adore the soulful moments she captured.

So, without further buildup, my Ten on Ten for August 2011.

Sunday, August 7, 2011

On the date I chose for my ten on ten, we had the boys’ best girlfriends over for a sleepover the night before.

I came downstairs on a rainy Sunday morning to find the four of them quietly giggling, drawing and reading. We all needed a rainy day to take a break on this beautiful summer!

The dreaded Augmentin. Will showed me his finger one day last week saying, “Mom, I think I sprained my wrist.” A small, swollen cut, oozing with pus at the tip of his finger was enhanced by a faint red line trailing up into his arm.

A quick trip to the pediatrician resulted in powerful and awful-tasting doses of this goop. He’s almost done. (Culture revealed strep group A infection. Thank goodness for modern medicine!)

Sorry the photo is so small, but it features “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” playing on my MacBook. Will, Henry, and their overnight guests Olivia and Gabby are all gaga for Harry. You wouldn’t believe how quiet four children can be when they are listening to Harry Potter audio book reader Jim Dale.

“Mom! Watch! I am blowing air into my ears!”

The rain still falling, this crew took every toy in the house, spread them out on blankets, couches and chairs in the living room, and had a sale.

Books were “20:50” each, camping gear was $1.50 a piece or $30 for all five pieces and the game of Perfection was $80. Legos and Playmobil had their own price points, and some, of course, were spesl.

Henry has had enough of the rain by now.

Finally! The rain stops. Naturally, my two and their neighbor decide to wash rocks to celebrate.

An hour later I found them over at the neighbor’s house, washing their bikes and singing one stanza from Katy Perry’s “Fireworks” OVER AND OVER.

Hydrangeas in bloom.

Pool time! Made extra special to have a swim with visiting cousin Justin, pictured on right.

After staying up til nearly 10 on the sleepover, these toes and the five-year-old body attached to it were out cold. Good night!

Julie + Seth: Married on Block Island

August 3, 2011

Julie and Seth were married on a rainy and windy June day on Block Island, but they embraced the weather and even held their ceremony outside at the Block Island’s grand Spring House Hotel–it was wonderful!

Scott Westervelt, a whizz with a needle, plies his art.

The INDOOR shoes. Gorgeous.

Seth taking in the view as he awaits the first glimpse of his bride.

With nephew in darling seersucker suit before the ceremony.

The iconic Spring House Hotel. The porches came in handy!

This stunner came from Sin, in Providence. I love their website:

This is why rain is NEVER a bad thing.

Happy love, Julie and Seth! We had such a great day with you!

Ashley + Lyndsey: Getting married!

August 2, 2011

These two are getting married Friday at Kinney Bungalow at Sunset Farm in Narragansett, RI, and when we got together to discuss some wedding details, we took a few impromptu photos in downtown Westerly, RI.  They are so sweet and kind and compassionate with each other I just know their day will be a delight. Looking forward to their big day!

A fun note for photographers:  I used Get Totally Rad’s Rad Lab to edit these photos, the very first ones I’ve done with this amazing new Photoshop plug-in, and I LOVE this tool. I cannot wait to spend some more time working with it, and I highly recommend checking it out.

Somehow my first born baby boy has turned into a seven-year-old boy today. I had to poke through these photos tonight—I don’t know if any parent can ever stop looking for the baby and toddler and small child that came before–I know I can barely picture that little one when I see my seven-year old swim out to the dock tonight!

The day started EARLY (this kid cannot WAIT for presents) and with Legos on the scene, all was good. (Also, tetherball, new watercolors and a few other goodies were all well received). Waffles, fresh raspberries picked yesterday and whipped cream for breakfast, Legos all morning, art camp in the afternoon and a picnic dinner at the beach with pizza, crabbing, boogie boarding and swimming to the dock made for a picture perfect day.

Will, we love your enthusiasm and spirit, your zest and energy, your artistic and athetic sides, your love of words, your long lashes and those deep brown eyes, among so many other things. We love you, baby boy–happy birthday!

Angela + Doug: Married on Cape Cod (slideshow)

June 27, 2011

Angela and Doug were married last month on Cape Cod at a divine, heartfelt ceremony on what turned into a gorgeous, early summer day. (See sneak peek here.) These two are so beautifully connected and SO in love that I think everyone around them feels a little more lovey-dovey than usual! So when I was putting together their slideshow, I was just dying to use this song that suits them SO well, Fallen by Lauren Wood.

Here is your slideshow, Angela and Doug!

Happy love!
